Scott Robert Gerlicher, a longtime Minneapolis Police Department commander, public safety leader, and beloved member of the Minnetonka community, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday morning, June 6, 2026. He was 58 years old.
Gerlicher’s sudden passing has left family members, friends, former colleagues, and community leaders mourning the loss of a man whose career was defined by public service, leadership, and dedication to protecting others.
Born on November 13, 1967, in Minneapolis, Scott grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he built lifelong friendships and developed a deep connection to the community he proudly called home. He graduated from Minnetonka High School before continuing his education at Normandale Community College and Metro State University, where he earned a master’s degree in Public Administration. He also graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy, Class 206, and completed numerous law enforcement leadership and management programs throughout his career.
Scott dedicated more than three decades of service to the Minneapolis Police Department, serving from 1989 until his retirement in 2021. During his distinguished career, he worked in a wide range of roles, progressing from Patrol Officer to Deputy Chief and earning the respect of fellow officers and community members alike.
Among his most notable achievements were coordinating Minneapolis Police Department efforts during the tragic Interstate 35W bridge collapse, helping lead public safety planning for Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, and supporting security operations for the NCAA Final Four. As commander, he became widely recognized as the lead law enforcement official responsible for planning public safety efforts surrounding the 2018 Super Bowl, one of the largest events ever hosted in Minnesota.
Following his retirement from law enforcement, Scott continued serving his community as the Security and Emergency Management Coordinator for Minnetonka Public Schools. His commitment to public safety never wavered, and he remained deeply involved in community initiatives and event planning.
Outside of his professional life, Scott embraced adventure, friendship, and fun. He was an avid downhill skier who traveled extensively in search of the perfect powder run and spent 25 years serving as an instructor and director with Ski Jammers. He loved spending time on Lake Minnetonka listening to carefully curated music playlists and often joked about becoming a nightclub DJ.
Friends also remember his creative side. Scott enjoyed crafting custom “Shot-Skis” for friends and family and was known for his unforgettable sense of humor. Those closest to him often said he laughed the hardest at his own jokes, bringing joy and energy to every gathering.
In recent years, he served as the logistical coordinator for Excelsior Rotary Concerts in the Commons and Director of Security for the Taste of Minnesota, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping create safe and successful community events.
Scott is survived by his wife, Cari; daughters Hannah (Nathan) Schneider, Emma, and Molly; his father, Dr. Robert Gerlicher; sister Susan (Richard) Olson; several nephews; and beloved cats Poppy and JoJo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Gerlicher.
A celebration of Scott’s life will be held on Friday, June 12, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Lafayette Club in Minnetonka Beach, with a presentation scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Breakthrough T1D or the Hendrickson Foundation in Scott’s honor.
As tributes continue to pour in from former law enforcement colleagues, community leaders, friends, and loved ones, Scott Gerlicher is being remembered for his leadership, dedication, humor, and unwavering commitment to serving others. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched during his distinguished career and throughout the Minnesota communities he loved.
